The Tiffany Dragonfly Floor Lamp is as popular as ever
|The Tiffany Dragonfly Floor Lamp, or more accurately the Tiffany-style Dragonfly Floor Lamp is very popular still today. More than a century on from the original design, the dragonfly motif is still revered and appreciated by many people who appreciate fine art, and almost practical design.
The original design has usually been credited to the Louis Comfort Tiffany, head of the Tiffany Studios. But many of the famous designs including the Tiffany Dragonfly Floor Lamp have been shown to have been designed by the ‘Tiffany Girls” – a group of women who worked at Tiffany Studios at the turn of the last century. Chief designer of the Tiffany Girls was Clara Driscoll who is now credited with designing many of the iconic glass designs including the daffodil range and the dragonfly range. She was the almost anonymous driver behind the group of artisans that designed and made the iconic lamps. We have a lot to be thankful to Clara.
The design is carried forward today and many lamp manufacturers have copied and adapted the dragonfly lamp design in to their creations. These replicas pay homage to the original, and are inspired by the amazing creations of the Tiffany Studios.
Their popularity continues to grow, as a backlash perhaps to the flat pack, modular furniture that is so popular now. The design straddled the old and new – the new century; one of opulence and optimism, the time of Atlantic travel (Titanic) and the Great Gatsby. Before the Great Depression and a forerunner to Art Deco, the Tiffany style continues to be The colours, the style, the pictures, the glass, the sense of old-world, the American – these are all features that keep the Tiffany Dragonfly Floor Lamp top of the list of desirable home wares.
